Department of Histopathology
Histopathology is the study of diseased tissue at the microscopic level. It involves examining biopsies or surgical specimens to identify structural and cellular abnormalities that indicate disease processes.Key FunctionsExamination of biopsies from organs (e.g., skin, liver, breast, lungs) to detect tumors, infections, or inflammatory diseases.Determines whether tumors are benign or malignant.Assesses tumor grade, margins, and invasiveness, which are critical for staging cancer.Conducts post-mortem examinations to determine the cause of death and investigate disease progression.Uses Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stains routinely.May apply special stains or immunohistochemistry (IHC) to detect specific markers or pathogens.Provides rapid diagnosis during surgery (e.g., checking tumor margins during cancer surgery).Works closely with surgeons, oncologists, dermatologists, and other clinicians for patient management.
